For the better part of the past week Care and Share Food Bank, located at 2605 Preamble Point in Colorado Springs, has been taking food and monetary donations to help the victims of the Black Forest Fire.
Sunday afternooon, dozens of volunteers came out to box up food. The food will be be distributed to familes at the El Paso County Disaster Assistance Center, located at 1675 Garden of the Gods, and to fire fighters and officals on the front lines.
As of Saturday, more than 135,000 pounds of food and $112,000 have been donated. The food drive will run throughout the upcoming week from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and there is still a great need for food.
"It is probably greater than that of what we experienced during Waldo Canyon," Care and Share Chief Development Officer Stacy Poore said. "We're not there yet, in terms of the amount of food coming in, but we're just grateful at what the community is doing, and we just ask them to give until it hurts."
Care and share is planning a food give away for some point in the next two weeks. During the give away, they plan on being able to give families in need non-pershiable foods as well as fresh produce.
